CD - Melodrom - Melodrom (NR-CD-R-0151) - SLO - NIKA Records.

discophilia.blogspot.com/CD - Melodrom - The Guide

Melodrom have collaborated with DJ Umek and the band Rotor, and Mina has worked with Laibach on their remix of the song Ohne Dich (Mina Harker's Version) by Rammstein. She also joined Laibach on their Volk tour in 2006 as a replacement for Boris Benko of Silence.

Melodrom (originally Marquee) was founded in 1999 in cafe Marilyn at Slovenian Cinematheque, for the purpose of creating a soundtrack for a new film by Jurij Meden. The line-up has remained the same ever since. Following Meden's suggestion, the band started rehearsing immediately and in the beginning of the year 2000 they recorded the film soundtrack in KifKif studio. Nevertheless, the film was never actually shot. Initially, the band's purpose was to create music for theater performances and shows. They recorded music for the theatre performance Zvitorepka, directed by Aleš Korpič, and various dance performances by Bara Kolenc, including Razobraz (2001), Čečečečebula (2002), Brezdno (2004) and, most recently, Zimska pravljica (2004) by Borut Bučinel. In the autumn of 2002 the band collaborated with the designer Uroš Belantič of the Oktober fashion house to create the music for their spring/summer 2003 collection fashion show. The catalogue representing the collection was accompanied by Melodrom’s promotional first single. Melodrom’s “proper and independent” band career began in March 2001 with the concert in Gromka club at Metelkova mesto. They started preparing material and recorded their first demos. Some of the recordings found their way to Radio Študent station, were aired successfully and, consequently, the song Extemporary Ending (called Pet petnajst in the Slovene version) reached fourth place on the International Crossradio chart of best singles of 2001. In 2004 they reached seventh place with the song Duet. After the first recordings and initial radio success, the band had increasingly more concerts. A few concerts in Slovenia and Croatia (Močvara) established them as a promising young band and thus they were selected for the second Club Marathon tour organized by Radio Student which enabled them to have concerts all over Slovenia. They also played in Austria, Germany and Serbia and Montenegro.

CDR - Black Strobe - A Remix Selection (PLAYR17CD) - UK - CDr Promo with Pressrelease

CDR - Black Strobe - A Remix Selection (PLAYR17CD) - UK - CDr Promo with Pressrelease

01. Black Strobe - Shining Bright Star (Phones Industrial Version)
02. Tiefschwarz - Ghost Track (Black Strobe Remix)
03. Märtini Brös. - The Biggest Fan (Black Strobe Remix)
04. Rapture, The - Sister Saviour (Black Strobe Remix)
05. Depeche Mode - Something To Do (Black Strobe Alternative Remix)
06. Carretta, Hacker, Millimetric - Moscow Reisen (Black Strobe Remix)
07. Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass (Black Strobe Remix)
08. Dominatrix - Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight (Black Strobe Remix)
09. Rammstein - Keine Lust (Black Strobe Remix)
10. Sweet Light - Abusator (Black Strobe Remix)

Black Strobe compile the best of their remixes on ‘A Remix Selection’ to be released early December. They’re also hard at work on a debut album.

Black Strobe is Parisians Ivan Smagghe and RA podcaster Arnaud Rebotini, who have been mining the darker side of the dancefloor since 2000. Their first single ‘Innerstrings’ came out on Trevor Jackson’s now defunct Output Recordings, following it up with 'Me and Madonna' (featuring Jennifer Cardini on vocals), ‘The Abwehr Disco’ and this year’s ‘Last Dub On Earth’ on Crosstown Rebels, a string of singles that spoke of their intent to make “electronic music that is not afraid to scare people.”

As remixers they’ve rejigged artists both old (Nitzer Ebb, Dominatrix and Depeche Mode) and new (The Rapture, Bloc Party, Sweet Light), blurring the line between rock and dance in a manner befitting a duo who count both Slayer and Detroit techno among their influences. ‘Black Strobe – A Remix Selection’ likewise covers the bases, including rerubs of everything from an unreleased “doom disco” version of Bloc Party’s 'Like Eating Glass' to ‘Sweet Light's electro hit 'Abusator' (Arnaud's fave) to even a treatment of Teutonic metallers Rammstein’s ‘Keine Lust’.

So how does their remix work fit into the bigger Black Strobe picture? “This is the sound that defines us most. Or did,” Ivan admits. “Remixing defines your identity for the audience but, for you, it is very different than your personal work. It also shows almost only the club side of our thing.”

Also in the pipeline is a debut album, slated for release in Spring 2007 with British indie producer Paul Epworth (The Rapture, Bloc Party, The Futureheads) behind the buttons. The connection with Epworth has led to Black Strobe remixing two of the artists he has produced (Bloc Party and White Rose Movement) and, in turn, Epworth has remixed the Strobe’s current single 'Shining Bright Star'. Ivan Smagghe on Paul Epworth: "Paul is so versatile, he has a vast musical culture and a fascination, like us, with Steve Albini," Ivans says. "When we talked about music, we clicked.” Arnaud agrees: “I think it’s important to have external input and someone else’s judgment.”

So how hard was it for Black Strobe to listen to their back catalogue and decide the final cut for ‘A Remix Selection’? “It can be quite a scary thought to listen to a four-year stretch of work,” Ivan admits, “but, on the whole, it stands the test of time. A remix is by essence a track done 'for the moment' – you do not think of it as something to last as much as your own things. I suppose ‘sincere’ is the word. If you have done some work in a sincere way, even if it is old you will not have any problem listening to it. The remixes (on this album) are also quite different from each other, which helps. It’s also true that all these form a sound that may be a bit behind us now.”

2x7" Grinderman (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free - Ltd Edition

Limited Edition One Sided 7" Single.
Number: #1641 and #1639 (of 3000 copies)
1. (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free (Edit)

---

The third single release by Grinderman taken from their critically acclaimed album, this special one-sided limited edition single, (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free, is available on 7" and download.

Written by Grinderman, (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free was produced by Nick Launay, recorded at RAK Studios in April 2006 and mixed at Metropolis Studios.

Below Grinderman discuss (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free from their self-titled debut album.

"I was trying to find a way into what I wanted the lyrics to be concerned with," says Cave. "I was listening to John Lee Hooker and I heard these lines buried deep in one of his songs:

I went down to my baby's house
And I sat down on the step

"And in that instant, I knew I'd found a way in, you know, to the album. That's all you need, a way in. Lyrically, the whole album rests on those two lines," says Cave.

"How does that relate to Set Me Free?" asks Sclavunos.

"Well, the protagonist in Set Me Free is disconnected from things whilst his 'other' has left him in order to engage in the world," explains Cave. "The protagonist no longer has a "witness", he is alone, and left to metaphorically "sit down on the step".

"Oh," says Jim.

"The drums and bass are copasetic," says Warren. "That applies to the whole record. The rhythm section is really solid and provides a lot of freedom for the other instruments to roam."

"If I remember rightly, attention was paid to keep the songs short and direct as possible; most of them come in under three and a half minutes", says Casey.

"One needed to get to the nub of things... fast," says Cave.

CD - IAMX - Kiss + Swallow

IAMX is the illegitimate brainchild of Sneaker Pimps front man and whiz kid producer Chris Corner. His self-produced, performed and perfected debut album “Kiss + Swallow” is a moving collection of songs for unhinged and creative mind.

The content is sexual, synthetic, dark and melodic, like 80s’ electro glam soundtrack to Svankmajer film. Call it a cross between Detroit or Berlin escapades, Prince or Roxy Music’s pop, or the electronic universe of Cabaret Voltaire. IAMX erotic vocals accompanied with frantic guitar noise breaths life into the songs.

On stage Chris is joined by a changing selection of close friends, and their performance is set to a visual backdrop of home videos, Japanese porno and fighting toys.

RECLUSIVE IN BERLIN THE SECOND PHASE OF THE IAMX ADVENTURE BEGINS. AN EXTENSION OF THE BLEAK, BITING, SEXUAL TENSION OF THE FIRST ALBUM, "THE ALTERNATIVE" INTRODUCES THE DEPTH OF A WORLD VIEW. VICIOUS LYRICAL IMPATIENCE, GENDER BENDING, LOVE WARS AND ANIMAL INSTINCTS COMBINE WITH SCRATCHY, WIRED PRODUCTION AND INFECTIOUS MELODIES TO CREATE A DYNAMIC FOLLOW UP TO "KISS AND SWALLOW". LESS ELECTRONIC AND MORE DRUG FUNK, IT WILFULLY ROCKS AND SWAYS LIKE A DIRTY CIRCUS DOING CABARET. CHRIS CORNER HAS INCREASED THE USE OF REAL INSTRUMENTS AND HAPPY ACCIDENTS, BREATHING MORE LIFE INTO HIS SONG MAKING PROCESS. WITH HELIUM POWERED VOCALS, VIOLENT GUITARS AND GRINDING RHYTHM IAMX WILL MAKE YOU LOVE AGAIN.
